About Us

Welcome to Ulterior Motive! Our story begins in wonderful New Jersey, just outside of New York City, our founder James 'Heff,' grew up in the shadow of that melting pot, exposed to every culture and style known to the world. After going off and attempting college, and finding it wasn't a great fit, Heff returned back home to "find himself," as it were. Turns out, finding oneself involved signing away ones soul to the United States Marine Corps in his case. Without getting bogged down into "war stories" or classified information that would get us in trouble, Heff learned a lot about life, people, and the world. One of the big take aways that we try to incorporate into our clothing here is effort.

 

After serving for 5 years, Heff was honorably discharged and continued to work for the defense industry as a government contractor. Being afforded the opportunity to go to school with the GI Bill, Heff finished his BA at George Mason in Virginia, before moving his family out to Hawaii and eventually achieving his Master's degree, all while working full time as a defense contractor and raising a family. Having put in 10 or so years of this life, and after several personal issues, Heff decided that it was time to follow a dream. Walking away from engineering and project management might seem like a crazy endeavor to many, but anyone who knows Heff knows for damn sure that crazy is not accurate enough to describe him. And so, in August of 2025, Ulterior Motive was founded. 

Here at Ulterior Motive we believe in hard work and putting forth out best in everything that we do. If our name is going to be put on something and go out into this world, we want it to be known that only the best is there. Though we are currently using the materials and supplies available to us, we are currently, and always, in the process of pivoting to something better. That is one of the reasons why Heff elected 'Constant Progress' as our tagline and mantra. We believe in refusing to settle for mediocre, and that we as humans are capable of incredible feats. That is why you can always rest assured that we will provide you with greatness, and if you don't feel that we achieved that, then we will work with you to perform to our best.
